How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults. Keep your servant from deliberate sins! Don’t let them control me. Then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin.
Psalm 19:12-13
There are days where these verses click. There are others where my struggles seem so evident that it’s difficult to think of them as “hidden.” This certainly is heart-check type of a prayer. No Christian wants to have anything that hinders their relationship with God, and there are so many ways that sin can sneak its way into our hearts and lurk, ready to do damage.
One of the things that I try to do when I pray for anything, whether it’s guidance or I ask for something specific or if I’m praying for others, is to tell God and to remember that He knows the content of my heart. I want Him to know that I know how well He knows me.
I want my prayer to end the way that David wraps up that psalm in the next verse:
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
Psalm 19:14
I want all things to be something brings the most glory to God. That’s why David begged God to point out and cleanse anything in his heart that might be hidden.
